Now that we have:
- A big property to maintain
- A furniture business
- An antsy baby
- A little boy up to shenanigans
- Four chickens
- Two dogs
- Four more chickens
- And no Roomba
We decided to start a blog. You know, just for fun.
What a leisurely time of life.
Whenever we meet someone new, they want to know:
- Do you really live off of Etsy? Don’t you have another, more legitimate, boring job?
- Your baby was born WHERE?
- If you’re from Mexico City and Graeme is from California, how did you meet?
- Why don’t you sound like Sofia Vergara?
- Where’s your TV? And,
- Is it hard to make tinga?
So we figured it would be fun to answer all these questions here, and tell you about a lot of other things we’ve been doing lately.
In the last few years, we sold our accounting business and moved to the country, had a baby and took him to Europe and Mexico, had another baby and didn’t take her anywhere because Dave Ramsey said no. We opened and closed an online quilt shop, then opened our furniture shop which truly changed our lives.
We planted a garden, learned about gophers and septic tank explosions (unfortunately the gophers did not explode), bought some chicks and kept them alive as of this writing, learned to keep poinsettias happy until March, and kinda sorta started homeschooling Forest but not really.
Back when Graeme still got regular haircuts, he built houses in Costa Rica, Mexico, and Romania. He lived in Laurel, Mississippi for a while, where he helped start a church and bought a few houses, which we later remodeled together. I’ll definitely be writing about this when I’m not in a very good mood. It looks really fun on HGTV, but remodeling a duplex in the middle of a Mississippi summer was a pain in the nuisance. But still. The story deserves to be told. Ben Napier, who now stars in the HGTV Home Town show, was running for city council back then and stopped by in his blue truck to look around and give us sweaty handshakes.
It was in that moment, when he saw us covered in paint and mosquito bites, sanding the floor on our knees and swearing silently, that he realized: This is the dream. There should be a show about this.
I’d also like to tell you about getting engaged at 17, our terrible wedding, wonderful Spanish honeymoon, my immigration story, and things we’ve learned in eight years of marriage (don’t go to bed angry or buy duplexes in Mississippi).
Graeme will write DIY carpentry posts, and I will try my best not to stifle his dad humor, which is just beginning to blossom like a delicate flower. Graeme is also planning on posting really cool recipe videos, and I already know they will be amazing. Everything he makes is delicious and beautiful (have you seen his latest baby?), and he is just nerdy enough that he will figure out how to make those cool videos in about two hours. If it weren’t for Graeme, this website would look terrible.
I will also be posting hair tutorials, like the super-quick hideous pineapple mom bun, and how to style what’s left of your postpartum bangs.
Hm. Maybe not that.
We hope you find something you like around here! And if you’re ever in the area, will you come visit us?
