We lived in a tiny house for a few years and had to come up with some creative furniture and storage ideas. It was during our time in this little house that we started making floating nightstands and floating desks. They say necessity is the mother of invention, right?
Unfortunately, we were never able to figure out a way to store extra children and we had to move. But we had some good times in this tiny house.
One of our favorite projects in this little house was adding shelves all around the top of the hallway, for storing books. If you have a tiny hallway and lots of books, this is a great way to display and store them.
Also, if you look carefully, you will appreciate a nice spiderweb in the corner under Dr. Bradley’s Husband Coached Childbirth, which, by the way, is super weird. One of my only regrets in life is having paid for the Bradley course, which included lengthy discussions about Kegels in a room full of strangers who all know what that means.
Why watch a birth video at home when you could, for a few hundred dollars, witness the power (and stretchiness) of the female parts along with twelve ladies and their bewildered husbands?
Not a lot of eye contact is made during these classes.
Here’s (part of) our travel bucket list in a frame!
We’ve only crossed off two countries so far: Ireland, and Australia. We went to Ireland when Forest was a baby, and I went to Darwin, Australia to visit my brother. I didn’t tell him I was coming and jumped out from behind a couch.
I didn’t get the reaction I was hoping for, partly because David is a nurse and keeps his cool, but mostly because he DIDN’T SEE OR HEAR me, even though he was only about twelve feet away. How do you not notice a stinky intruder (long flight) jumping, yelling, and clapping in your living room? If they have a baseball bat in their bedroom, it’s probably on Jasmin’s side of the bed.
Graeme still gets a little grumpy when he remembers I’ve been to Australia and he hasn’t. Hehe.
I should write about Australia sometime. My first night there, I went to a Bible study and met some nice Australians, a lady from New Zealand, and a snake. You could identify the New Zealander because she screamed and stood on the couch while everyone else watched the glossy black snake slither casually across the backyard and said, “Meh, it’s probably fine.”
During that trip, I swam in a lake and then realized the next day there were crocodile traps, I saw a roadkill hamburger stand, tried to skateboard for the first and last time in my life, and met a flirty old man who hit on my sister in law, sang us a song, and told us he hates Darwin because it’s as hot as the devil’s arse. True. Very true.
Anyways, back to the furniture…
Here is the very first, wonderfully tiny floating nightstand we made for our bedroom. We added it to our furniture shop and it became a favorite pretty quickly.
Mahogany is beautiful, but I got a little tired of the orange tone. One of the benefits of being married to a carpenter is I can be persnickety and return things for free. Hehe.
Graeme obliged and made another nightstand, this time pine, stained with Minwax Dark Walnut.
What do you think? Mahogany or Pine?
Our kitchen was also tiny, so Graeme made this floating command center. It turned out beautiful, and of course we had to add it to the shop!
We painted the bottom Benjamin Moore Cloud White, and stained the top Minwax Dark Walnut.
Funny story, we started using Benjamin Moore Cloud White when a customer ordered something in that color, specifically. Etsy realized the credit card was stolen and cancelled his order. But hey, the thief had good taste and we are grateful to him because this is our favorite shade of white now.
Graeme also made several little wall cabinets, to add storage in every room. We had one over the command center, as well as in the bathroom and bedroom.
Tiny wall cabinets are wonderful, whether you live in a tiny home or not! I mean, how could you not love this?
We’ll have to come up with some new storage ideas soon because we are seriously considering building a tiny home on wheels next year, as part of our plan to LEAVE CALIFORNIA! I am a little excited about this, AS YOU CAN SEE!
I really look forward to sharing that adventure on here! We are in the planning stages right now, but I already know it’s going to be beautiful. We want to build a truly inviting, cottage style tiny home.
With cozy minimalism as the goal, we are building a functional, well-organized tiny home that is just as inviting and beautiful as an old Swedish cottage. Except old Swedish cottages are usually red, and we can’t have that, can we?
A blue cottage in the woods would be much, much better.
Do you need a little extra storage in your life? We might have a little something for you in our shop 😉
